Between the contrast and the analogy, the regional and the internacional: dialogues between independent structure and load-bearing wall in interventions of the building, from the Missions Museum to the Bread Museum

Resumo

In the words of Francisco de Gracia, "intervening is modifying", and this modifying action is loaded with conceptions about architectural intervention, based on relational criteria established between the existing architecture, with its historically attributed meanings, and new intervention, with its interpretations of historical material. In Brazilian architecture, from the primitive Missions Museum (Museu das Missões) of Lucio Costa (1937), through the SESC Factory (1977) by Lina Bo Bardi, to the Bread Museum (Museu do Pão, 2005) by Marcelo Ferraz and Francisco Fanucci (Brasil Arquitetura Group), such interventions are treated in an interpretive way, surpassing the exclusively preservationist position of conservation laws, focusing on the problems of architecture, that is, the knowledge of the formal and physical logic of the building. The research provides evidence of this peculiar way of approaching the architectural intervention that is directly related to the explicit foundations of modern Brazilian architecture based on The Carioca School: total abstraction of the elements of architecture and assimilation of the independent structure. The Brasil Arquitetura Group follows this heritage, initiated by Lucio Costa and carried on by Lina Bo Bardi. Three projects are emblematic in relation to the management of the independent skeleton and load-bearing wall in the face of intervention theories: the KKKK Complex in Registro (1996), the Tacaruna Cultural Centre in Recife (2002), and the Bread Museum in Ilópolis (2005). In these buildings the pre-existence and the interventions combine contrasts and analogies between the independent skeleton and structural wall through the emphasis on the structural diversity of the elements of composition.
